Let Freedom Finally Ring

This 4th of July brings a whole new meaning to the words Independence Day.

July of 2020 created a feeling of being trapped and isolated. Where I lived, we were still literally in “lock down” because of the Covid-19 virus.

Out of caution we cancelled our neighborhood block party and my city changed the annual fireworks display to a virtual showing.

Nothing felt free. I remember hoping and praying that on the next 4th of July, in 2021, my neighbors and I would be together again without the fear or judgement that we felt in 2020.

Today, as I take my morning 6:00 am stroll with my early rising toddler, I can’t help but appreciate the signs of patriotism that are starting to pop up in my neighborhood. There are flags flying and bright colors of red, white and blue dotting the porches and front yards along our route.

These patriotic colors bring me so much hope. Not just that we live in a great country founded on freedom, but because this year, unlike years past, we will have another reason to celebrate our independence. Independence from a virus that crippled many families, friendships and careers.

So this year, more than ever, I am going to shout… Let Freedom Ring!
