Watercolor Learning Activity for Young Kids

I always try to sneak in a little learning without my kids noticing. They are very active boys but I can usually get them to sit and paint with watercolors.

I started creating “mystery paintings” for them. As they get older I have adapted them to fit their academic level.

Try this crayon resist activity to reinforce your child’s age level.

What you will need

  • Watercolor paper
  • White crayon
  • Watercolor paint

Create Mystery Pages

I use a white crayon to create mystery pages for my kids to paint over. Here are a few ideas of what you can write.

Letter of the week (upper or lower case)

Mixed Letters

Child’s Name

Shapes

Numbers 1-10

Numbers 2-Digit

Sight Words

Math Facts (we used addition)

Clues for a scavenger hunt

Riddle of the day

Using Numbers

Time to Paint

Give your kids the mystery paper and let them watercolor over it to reveal the letters, words, shapes or clues that you created. The wax from the crayon creates a resist and the paint will only color that portion of the paper.

Display Your Artwork

This activity requires very little prep and is really easy to clean up. It makes great wall art too!

Happy Painting (and learning, shhh!)

And if you are wondering how watercoloring went for an 18 months old….

Usually I just have to prepare for a mess and be ready to clean-up. 10 minutes of quiet painting sometimes is worth the 20 minutes of clean-up.
